My car is an octavia 1.6 diesel dsg auto and has done about 86000 miles. It has been running perfectly fine until last night when I stopped in the parking space and then when i come back and started it and put it in drive it will only show D and not D1 as normal and then GEARBOX ERROR appeared.

Despite driving an Octavia, I too have the dreaded dry 7 speed DSG transmission. Currently in the 6th year of ownership from new with just about 90,000 miles on. And fingers well crossed. However if the DSG issue affects the trade-in value (as it must) I might as well drive the car, i.e it is worth more to me to drive than trade.

The problem you've described suggests a build-up of metallic particles (from wear and tear inside the transmission) which are being attracted to the magnetic sensors inside the gearbox and leading to bogus commends being sent to the car's on-board computer.
